What do we mean by Legacy?

The dictionary say that legacy means “an amount of money or property left to someone in a will”, but we believe it is much more than that.  It’s not just the financial legacy that you are leaving.  It’s also the spiritual, intellectual, emotional, social and financial legacy.

We believe most people want to pass on “Wisdom as well as Wealth.”  King Solomon says “Wisdom along with an inheritance is good and an advantage to those who see the sun. For wisdom is protection just as money is protection, But the advantage of knowledge is that wisdom preserves the lives of its possessors."

Why Legacy by Design?

Unfortunately, many families operate on Legacy by Default instead of Legacy by Design.  They may have a will or some trusts that their attorney helped them prepare, but they have not given significant thought as to what the impact of their wealth will be on their heirs.

For example, they may not have given serious thought to questions such as:

• What amount of an inheritance will be a blessing and not a curse to our children?

• Why are we leaving this inheritance to our children?

• What do we hope they will do with it?

• In what form and when should we leave it?  Outright? In Trust?

• Would it be better to leave them assets or should we rather leave them a regular income source?

• How well have we prepared them to receive what we will be leaving them?

• Will we leave any of our estate to charity?  And if so, how will we leave it?

• Have we ever told our heirs what we will be leaving them in our estate?

• What will happen to our business?

We often tell clients, “There will be a family meeting.  It’s just a matter of whether you will be there or not!”
